Chapter Sixteen
"Tea? How lovely!" Zelara exclaimed, her warlike demeanor forgotten as she followed Titan into the dark interior of the cottage. Holding the rabbit-slash-zobgoblin tightly, Titan saw through its eyes to see the old lady's true form.
Yep. She was a monster.
Her eyes were the first things he saw of her, like beady pools of pee-yellow that reflected in the dark. Her hair was a tangle of skinny, gnarled tentacles that looked so much like snakes that they might actually be snakes. With each movement, she sloshed and slurped like sludge in a gutter. She moved like an ooze, chunky and ponderous.
"Nice pet you have there, dearie," the witch said, reaching out to pat the zobgoblin on the head. As she did so, Titan got a good look at her hand. The texture of her skin was gelatinous, but also covered in warts and bumps. As Titan saw through the zobgoblin's experience, he could see the witch's mucky fingers topped in sharp stones. Those strange fingernails trailed along Vesperâs armor like branches scratching a window at night.
His heart raced, but he forced himself to keep his demeanor calm and friendly. "Thank you, ma'am," he said, stepping inside. "This is our... pet rabbit. Tim."
"Charmed, I'm sure," the witch replied, her yellow gaze darting between the zobgoblin and Titan. Did he look pale, like he'd just seen her true form?
The moment seemed to pass, and no wonder. Who in their right mind would knowingly strap a zobgoblin to their chest?
As they entered the not-so-cozy cottage, Titan hatched a plan. He couldn't let his companions know about the witch's true nature without alerting her, too. Instead, he had to play along and find an opportunity to strike... and get a sense of her weaknesses. Clearly, she was happy to play the charming hostess for now. He imagined her "tea and cookies" would be some kind of poison.
"Please, sit down," the old lady instructed, gesturing towards a small table. Zelara and Vesper eagerly took their seats, clearly looking forward to the promised tea. A stack of objects lay at the center of the table, and Titan flinched as Zelara snatched one and bit into it. He was pretty sure that had been a piece of wood.
That didn't concern him as much as the elf did, though. Also sitting at the table, slumped over her own plate of wooden cookies, was a woman with pointed ears and long, deeply purple hair. Her face was turned the other way, so he couldnât see her features, but there was a violet cast to her extremely pale skin. He guessed she was some sort of dark elf.
"Ah, um... Granny Edna, you already have a guest," Titan said. "We didn't mean to intrude."
"Oh, that's just Lyrael," the witch said nonchalantly. "Poor dear was looking for a cure for a bad hangover. Bachelorette party, you know how it is."
That phrase seemed incongruous with the world they were living in, but as always, Titan couldn't decide why.
"Anyway, she'll wake up right as
